How the Competition Works
The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League is the competition’s 72nd season and involves 81 teams from 53 UEFA member associations. Twenty-nine teams qualify directly for the league phase, with seven more earning their places through qualifying rounds that conclude with the play-offs in August.
The league phase consists of 36 teams, each playing eight matches. Teams finishing 1 to 8 advance directly to the last 16. Teams finishing 9 to 24 enter the knockout play-offs for the remaining spots.
Full Schedule — Qualifying for the Final
First qualifying round: July 7 and 8 (first legs), July 14 and 15 (second legs). Second qualifying round: July 21 to 29. Third qualifying round: August 4 to 11. Play-off round: August 18 to 26.
League phase draw: August 27. Matchday 1: September 8 to 10, 2026. Matchday 8 (final league phase round): January 27, 2027.
Round of 16: March 9 to 17, 2027. Quarter-finals: April 6 to 14, 2027. Semi-finals: April 27 to May 5, 2027.
The final takes place at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on Saturday, June 5, 2027 — the same ground where Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2-0 in 2019.

2026/27 Qualifying — Coming in July
First Qualifying Round — July 7
The 2026/27 qualifying phase begins on July 7 and runs through to August 26. A total of 52 teams will compete across the qualifying rounds, with 42 in the Champions Path and 10 in the League Path.
The first qualifying round draw took place on June 16, producing 14 ties. Shamrock Rovers face Floriana, Lincoln Red Imps take on Inter Club d’Escaldes, Sabah host The New Saints, and FK Vardar play KuPS Kuopio, among others.
Champions Path and League Path
From the second qualifying round onwards, the competition splits into two paths. The Champions Path contains teams that qualified as domestic league winners. The League Path contains teams that qualified through domestic leagues offering more than one place in the competition.
